Damage before a booked trip creates two problems: repairing the van and deciding what to do about the journey. A useful schedule shows the repair stages still outstanding, so travel decisions can be made from the vehicle’s actual progress.
The damage comes before the departure date
An unsecured opening, loose roof equipment or a new steering, braking or warning-light concern needs assessment before travel. A van that starts and moves has not necessarily been assessed for a long trip.
Keep the new symptoms with the damage report, including anything that changed after the impact. Vehicle operating instructions and a qualified assessment are the basis for deciding how it should be moved.
Three dates that mean different things
An inspection appointment is the opportunity to assess the damage. A repair start is when the agreed work is scheduled to begin. A projected completion date depends on the scope, parts and other work involved.
These dates can be especially important when the van is also your accommodation. Give the shop the departure date and any flexibility, then plan around the stage that has actually been reached.
Parts and conversion work can affect the schedule
A body panel may be identified while a damaged awning bracket or window still needs a part number. An item advertised for a similar van may not match the installation on yours.
Access through the camper interior can also involve the converter or another provider. The schedule needs to account for that work as well as the body repair, particularly when removal and reinstallation happen at different stages.
Choose a travel decision date
Pick a point early enough to change your bookings if necessary. At that point, use the known repair status: work completed, parts outstanding, required checks and collection arrangements. An earlier target date is less useful once one of those facts changes.
Keep travel bookings and any rental or insurance arrangements with their respective providers. Before collecting the van, establish what work has been completed and retain the repair and equipment records for the trip.
